Cleanliness is next to Godliness

On the 31st of January,2016 the Awareness and Environment cell organized a Nukkad Natak in order to forge a perspective among people concerning the gravity of Cleanliness around homes, localities and in conclusion, our country. The Nukkad Natak comprised short yet powerful episodes of daily life circumstances, which people encounter, so as to give out the message of the glaring demerits of littering, effects of unclean environments on life and the ways in which one can contribute to cleaning and maintaining the surroundings.

The event unfurled with the cell members spanning out in the streets of Solani Kunj as four groups and calling out to the people with zeal to come to listen to them. Once the people were were gathered, the members formed a circular arrangement in order to begin. After this, a small group of members would come inside the circle and would enact their roles while the ones in circle would interject as well as respond in the form a chorus. The closure of the event was with a chorus, reminding and projecting the motto of moving towards a cleaner and brighter future for India. Some of the episodes presented are a scene of a woman throwing out garbage in front their neighbour's house and her son, afterwards, slipping and injuring himself while coming home on the trash, another one was concerning our disrespect to, Gandhi, the man who lead our nation to freedom by disregarding his vision for a strong, healthy, and hygienic India.

In conclusion, the awareness team aimed to bring into notice a huge problem that a society faces today and the possible future scenarios which demonstrate the hazardous effects of littering and bad maintenance. The awareness team motivated the public to take an initiative and bring about a change so as to nullify the spiralling down to oblivion. Thus, in this manner the awareness cell has spread information among the masses about an important issue that will certainly bring welfare to the society.

The Insight Of Science

Apart from their regular teaching schedule from Monday to Friday, members of the Prerna cell, NSS IIT Roorkee conducted an interesting science workshop for the students of nearby areas on January 24th, 2016. The aim of this novel venture was to give those children a brief insight into the implementation of their already learnt courses of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. And those children enjoyed and learnt much from this event.
Student performing experiment

Considering the same, many experiments were demonstrated by the students of Prerna cell to show the various real life phenomena using simple equipment like sharpener, rubber, plastic glass, etc. These included concepts of centrifugal force, refraction of light, optical illusion, the well-known Boyle’s law, and others like the functioning of a hovercraft and how air pressure from a balloon can move a car.

Every experiment was followed by an interactive round to make students use their already learnt concepts for the justification of the marvel done before their eyes, telling them the actual and simple reasons behind it. The students were also asked to perform those experiments themselves for a better understanding of the classroom concepts.

About 35-40 students from the local schools of Roorkee attended it with great zeal and passion. They gained a lot of knowledge and were quite excited for the workshop from the beginning itself. Thus, application of theoretical knowledge into practical happenings really made the day for all brilliant and inquisitive minds. In the words of cell coordinator Shubham Jain himself, they were all excited to showcase such daily life science to those young minds.

Drawing Competition

Art needs no introduction, it speaks for itself. It’s said that “Drawing is exercise for a restless imagination”. To a person it imparts the ability to express things that are difficult to say. It enables others a peek of the creativity that lies hidden inside every one of us.

Children undoubtedly are the most artistic. RT Education cell of NSS IIT Roorkee endeavored to unleash the imagination of underprivileged children by organizing a drawing competition in the government school of the khanjarpur village. The event commenced in the morning at the school itself where the    students participated eagerly. The drawing materials like sheets, pencils, erasers, colors, etc was provided by the NSS. Children from classes 1 to 8 turned up for the competition in large numbers. All of them were excited.

The topic of the contest was “Save earth and save trees”. The event lasted about one and a half hours and then the drawing sheets were collected. Each entry was unique. The participants were called in the evening for prize distribution. After awarding first, second and third prizes from each class all the other children were given a pack of biscuits as consolation prize.

It was a successful endeavor by the students of the RT education cell of NSS that offered the poor children a way to express their thoughts.

NSS Visit

On the 16th of January, 2015, a group of 25 NSS volunteers from the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee along with program coordinator Mrs. Smita Jha visited an NGO, called the Bhartiya Gramotthan Sanstha in the District Tehri Garhwal, Uttarakhand.

The NGO, headed by Mr. Anil Joshi works towards rural and social development, and it achieves it by the production of handicraft, handloom and by giving commercial training to self-help groups of women. Around three thousand people are directly employed due to this NGO and several other are indirectly employed by them. The NGO works in the manufacturing of products like rags, carpets, woollen items, etc. which are made using the local fibres found in the state of Uttarakhand. Wool, jute and bark fibre, which is also called ‘bheemal’ in the local language, are the most commonly used fibres by the NGO to make their products.
The process of manufacturing used by the NGO is simple yet quite effective. First the fibre undergoes a mechanical processing called carding, after which it is put into a willow machine and then to a spinning unit. After another few rounds of processing the fibre is made into fine threads and transferred to the Khadi Gram Udyog which uses this fabric to make products of their own. The fibre is also made fine in several cases and assembled into uniforms and sweaters and such items.

The main aim of this NGO is not the production of items made from fabric, their main aim is to alleviate the social and economic status of the surrounding places. Due to the climate and lack of opportunities, several of the people from the nearby villages leave their home and go to the cities. But due to this NGO, these people now find employment near their homes and their children are now also able to receive good education, making their future bright and full of great prospects.

Apart from all this, the organisation also focuses on empowering women. They do so by providing work and important duties to the females. The shops set up by this NGO have women operating them, further strengthening their desire to enhance women employment. All this has allowed the female population of that place to be independent.

The NGO also follows several fair trade principles, making their workplace a great environment. The principles followed by them are-
·         Creating opportunities for economically disadvantaged producers.
·         Transparency and accountability.
·         Fair trading practices.
·         Payment of a fair price.
·         Ensuring no child labour and forced labour.
·         Non-discrimination, gender equality and freedom of association.
·         Ensuring good working conditions.
·         Providing capacity building.
·         Promoting fair trade.
·         Respect for the environment.

Apart from these practices, they also perform their manufacturing without causing much pollution. Their electricity demands are not high because of the use of manpower, plus they prohibit the use of plastic bags and instead use jute or cardboard bags further saving the environment.

The Bhartiya Gramothan Sanstha, established in 1989, is now 24 years old and is still going strong in making a difference in the world. Their desire to empower the local people, especially the women and their collaborations with self-help groups is highly commendable.

NSS can take huge inspiration from them and learn how the smallest of things can make a huge difference. The NGO shows us how the smallest of thing can lead to generation of employment. Their work is a motivation for everyone.
