"Cleanliness is next to
godliness" - Keeping this in mind, a mass cleanliness drive was organised
on 14th October 2012 by the Environment cell of NSS, IIT Roorkee in the campus.
The students were made to assemble near Saraswati
Mandir by 11:30 a.m. from where the drive commenced. Each student was provided
with a pair of gloves and a poly bag to handle the garbage. Boys took the
initiative of collecting the litters from roadside whereas the girls spread
awareness with the help of posters having catchy slogans. From Saraswati
Mandir, the drive went on to Saraswati Kunj and then headed towards the
convocation hall, cleaning the roadside around Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium.
All sorts of trash including plastics,
wrappers, empty packets, used bottles, papers etc were collected in separate
bags. Students kept themselves involved in the activity showing great zeal and
enthusiasm reflecting their feelings towards cleanliness..
There were no dustbins near the pavement
close to Lal Bahadur Stadium due to which, a lot of garbage was found littered
there. It could also be noticed that people were throwing garbage near the bins
and not into the bins, showing their negligence to abide by the cleanliness
rules and their laziness basically which made the surrounding look even worse
there. The drive ended at the Department of Chemical Engineering and all poly
bags along with gloves were disposed in the dustbin.
This event made everyone realize that
"Improvement begins with 'I' ".It also made people to realize that
their localities are also just like their homes and it's the people's own duty
to make it look clean and not litter randomly. Moreover the participants of
this drive are proud that they have inspired so many of the public who would
have seen their activity on the way and would have got some inspiration to keep
their own surrounding's also clean and if each one teaches one, then our planet
can become a heavenly place to dwell in.
