KIRAN BEDI'S GUEST LECTURE ON INDIAN YOUTH AND SOCIAL CHALLENGES TODAY

An interactive session on “Indian Youth and Social Challenges Today” was organized by NSS, IIT Roorkee, on 8th August, 2013 at the Convocation Hall, IIT Roorkee. The guest lecturer, Dr. Kiran Bedi, an Indian Social Activist and retired IPS officer, primarily focused on the problems faced by the youth and suggested solutions to alleviate them. The lecture was preceded by Dr. Bedi’s visit to Anushruti, the school for deaf children and Asmita, an organization working for the welfare of women. She enquired about the opportunities offered to the students and also gathered some insight about the level of effort being put up by the volunteers and the management.
Dr. Kiran Bedi first visited ANUSHRUTI at 11 am. She was apprised about the social initiative of IIT Roorkee aiming to impart special education to the underprivileged deaf children on modernand scientific basis. The spirit and enthusiasm of these children left her touched and moved. It was followed by her special address to the volunteers of NSS, IIT Roorkee at 3 pm in which she
on the need to ‘Think Globally and Act Locally’. She urged the students to realize their social responsibilities and work for the betterment of the society. The address was followed by Q&A sessions where issues like that of Durga Shakti Nagpal were discussed. She answeredqueries of students regarding Civil Services Examinations and also perked up the interest ofstudents aspiring for the same. Thereafter, she met Dr. Pradipta Banerji, Director, IIT Roorkee and together they had a meeting with the ASMITA members. ASMITA is an organization working for women empowerment by providing them skill training to promote the role of women in society.

The meeting continued till 5 pm after which, along with Dr. Ravi Bhushan, Dean, IIT Roorkee, and Director, she headed for her guest lecture on “INDIAN YOUTH AND SOCIAL CHALLENGES TODAY” in the Convocation Hall.

Dr. Bedi began the session with the analysis of the statistics she had collected from The Hindustan Times polls which highlighted the percentage of youth who are god-fearing (90%), happy (74.6%), under parental guidance (44%), etc. The lecture continued with the stress on “Leadership with a Conscience”, especially in a large society like India’s where in by 2020, the population of youth will exceed total population of America. A solution was proposed which was the introduction of a subject called “Conscience”, at the elementary level, through which the students will learn to live in a conscious way, helping them to face future challenges in the corporate world.

“Listen to the voice of your soul and judge what is right or wrong”, insisted Dr. Bedi. It was also suggested to keep a track of our insecurities and fears, strength and weakness, and our ethical issues which will shape us in a disciplined way. The convocation hall was brimming with energy and enthusiasm to witness the enlightening lecture by one of the stalwarts of our country.Dr. Kiran Bedi has a firm belief that the 450 million youth population of our country possesses the potential to overtake any prevalent superpower and it now lies in our hands to bring the change and steer our country towards the path of glory. The session ended with a vote of thanks from Mrs. Smita Jha, Program Officer, NSS, IIT Roorkee and the presentation of memento from Dean Sir. The evening wrapped up with the National Anthem and the students were filled with patriotism in their hearts and redefined goals in their minds as they left the
Convocation Hall.
