NSS organises sports competitions for children

“Remember that the happiest people are not those getting more, but those giving more.”

The students of NSS IIT Roorkee organised sports competitions for the children of Khanjarpur and Bhangeri village. The event was organised on January 26, 2016 in Subash Chandra Bose Club. Total forty-two students aged between 8-12 years took part in the competition. Before the event the volunteers had gone door to door to tell children about the event. A lot of preparation and planning was done beforehand before organizing the event.

First single lane race was organised for the children. It was followed by marble on spoon race, frog race and three leg race. Both boys and girls actively and enthusiastically participated in the events. Even some parents had come to cheer for their children. The children were so excited that many times they used to start running even before the count to start finished. Those who were not in the race were cheering for their friends. Volunteers as well as children both enjoyed a lot. The event lasted for about two and half hours. After all the races were over, prizes were given to the winners. At the end all the children were given refreshments. Vishal Pundir, a student of class 7th and the winner of the single lane race said that he enjoyed a lot and also that such events should be conducted regularly by NSS.

The aim of NSS IIT Roorkee is all-around development of children. The future of our country is in the hands of these children, Hence besides teaching children, it also holds such events. Events like these teach children importance of sports in life, team-spirit, discipline, sportsmanship and help them in overall development. They also instil competitive spirit and confidence in children. We can be sure of our country's bright future only if the children are both physically and mentally fit.

Drawing Competition

Art needs no introduction, it speaks for itself. It’s said that “Drawing is exercise for a restless imagination”. To a person it imparts the ability to express things that are difficult to say. It enables others a peek of the creativity that lies hidden inside every one of us.

Children undoubtedly are the most artistic. RT Education cell of NSS IIT Roorkee endeavored to unleash the imagination of underprivileged children by organizing a drawing competition in the government school of the khanjarpur village. The event commenced in the morning at the school itself where the    students participated eagerly. The drawing materials like sheets, pencils, erasers, colors, etc was provided by the NSS. Children from classes 1 to 8 turned up for the competition in large numbers. All of them were excited.

The topic of the contest was “Save earth and save trees”. The event lasted about one and a half hours and then the drawing sheets were collected. Each entry was unique. The participants were called in the evening for prize distribution. After awarding first, second and third prizes from each class all the other children were given a pack of biscuits as consolation prize.

It was a successful endeavor by the students of the RT education cell of NSS that offered the poor children a way to express their thoughts.

RT Education organizes event on Gandhi Jayanti

“Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom.” It is this very quote which motivates the members of the RT Education Cell of NSS, IIT Roorkee to go to the Khanjarpur village on a near daily basis and teach those children who can’t afford education. But that is not their only purpose as many fun events are also organized by them for the entertainment and knowledge enhancement of the kids. And one such event was held on the auspicious day of 2nd October, 2015, that is Gandhi Jayanti.

The event was a fun activity held mainly to make the children aware about Mahatma Gandhi’s role in fighting injustice in both South Africa and India.

The event began sharp at 6PM, right after the classes of the children held there prior to six. The first half of the program involved showing a movie on Gandhi to the children present there. The movie traced Gandhi’s life from birth up until his return to India and his subsequent non-cooperation movement. The movie taught the kids that being honest to oneself and to our loved ones is a very important thing in life.

In the second half of the program the children were asked general questions based on the movie. And those who were able to correctly answer were given lovely gifts. A few of the children even answered multiple times. And with this, the event came to a conclusion around 7PM.

After the short movie and quiz, a few of the children were even commended for the great academic progress that they had shown over the previous few weeks.

Seeing the enthusiasm of the kids it can be firmly stated that these children are interested and even excited to learn and grow.

Hindi Diwas Celebration

“A country that does not take pride in its language and literature can never progress.

RT Education cell of NSS, IIT Roorkee organised an "Hindi Essay Writing Competition", augmenting the eve of ‘Hindi Diwas’  . The event was held on 14/9/2015 at Chediram Junior High School.

Hindi has been recognized as the 2nd most spoken language around the world, yet it has somewhat lost a step in its very own country. The quality of literature has seen a steep decline and the future of Hindi literature has been questioned one too many times. Therefore to promote Hindi literature, an ‘Essay Writing Competition’ was conducted in the school premises. The students wrote on various topics ranging from ‘Significance of Independence Day’ to ‘Teacher’s Day Celebrations’. There were a total of 17 participants, which included students from 8th-10th classes.  They were given 20 minutes to write the essay, out of which the best 3 were orated by the student’s themselves. The essays were very well written and the students were successful in showcasing their beautiful vocabulary and unique styles of writing.

The winners then read out their essays and were lauded by the crowd. This was followed by Prize Distribution in which our NSS students congratulated the winners and rewarded them with books and chocolates. The event was concluded by a group photograph of all the winners and NSS workers.

Hindustan is incomplete without ‘Hindi’, and it is small strides like these which will help us popularize the language furthermore.

SWADES Movie Screening

FULL HOUSE,” that’s exactly what the Bose auditorium of physics department cried on 25th January as it held a special screening of the movie Swades: We The People organized by RT Education (Disha). It was an effort to rekindle the feeling of patriotism among the students on the eve of Republic Day.

With Gandhism as its main theme, the movie brought its viewers close to humanitarian essentials, questioning the existence of the Panchayat System in the villages, debating the needs of an education system, need for working in unison and the utter poverty, cultural disbeliefs of people.

Though the movie revolved around topics of great concern and with a running time of more than three hours, it kept the students glued to their seats. The screening was not just aimed to educate the students about their country’s problems, but to remind about a responsibility, to act and make a difference.

Origami Event by RT Education

“ART”, the expression of human creative skills and imaginations... A form of leisure in which human mind finds the most satisfaction… With the motive of bringing something innovative out of the children of DISHA classes, the RT Education cell of NSS IIT Roorkee organised an event on 21st and 22nd January 2012 at the C Class Club which was based on ORIGAMI”, a Japanese art of making objects with paper by merely folding it, without cutting or tearing.

A huge enthusiastic crowd of students gathered there and made several objects associating each one with their childhood and giving wings to their imagination.  A TULIP FLOWER, a PARTY HAT, a SAIL BOAT, a TWIRLING BIRD, a JUMPING FROG, a LADYBIRD, a BALL are few of the numerous objects that they made. The activity fostered their imagination. They thoroughly enjoyed and found origami to be a thrilling and informative experience.

The amount of endeavour and interest put in by the students of the village was highly appreciable and finally what came out of paper was sheer and spectacular.  This event of Origami, like other events of RT EDUCATION was based on the motive of inculcating imagination and invoking ideas in the highly perceptive minds of the children which is one of the most important and key-elements of Education. The event lived up to the NSS motive of bringing joy and imparting knowledge to the less fortunate ones and was a huge success.
