Health Check-Up Camp

NSS, IIT Roorkee organised a free health check-up camp in the village Sherpur, situated on NH-58, on 17th March, 2013. The camp began at 10 a.m., with the arrival of Dr. C.S. Grover (Eye Specialist, Abhilasha Eye Hospital) and Dr. Sanjeev Kumar (Dental Surgeon, Dental Square, IIT Hospital) who provided their services free of cost for the well being of village people.

NSS volunteers also conducted a publicity drive on the eve of the camp in the villages of Majra and Sherpur. They did door to door publicity in all the houses. The villagers took great interest in the camp, with most of them coming with their entire families. They came to know about their health status in a detailed manner after the check-up. The camp was concluded at 4 p.m.

Both esteemed doctors showed interest in knowing about the activities conducted by NSS. Dr. C.S. Grover congratulated NSS for the efforts being put up to make lives better for villages nearby IIT Roorkee in the best possible way. He also said that he was very delighted to be a part of the camp. Dr. Sanjeev Kumar suggested ways to conduct a much better and more organised health camp for the next time. The Pradhan of Sherpur village also congratulated NSS for its efforts and said that the continuous activities that are being conducted by NSS in these villages have helped a lot in bringing up changes.Villagers also appeared to be satisfied by the services provided by the doctors, and they also had the appreciative words for NSS, IIT Roorkee.

There were some issues that came up to light:
1.Most of the people suffered from Pyorrhoea.
2.Many old people had Cataract disease.
3.A villager told that when they go to chemists with the prescriptions that are provided to them by the doctors, they are sold expired/outdated medicines, because of their illiteracy.
4.This time free medicines could not be provided to villagers.

This camp was like an initiation, a first step. From the next time, it will be tried that we organise a bigger and better health camp, so that the disadvantaged masses could remain healthy.

Visit to Majra by NSS Nirmaan

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” With this spirit NSS-Nirman visited a small village Majra, near Roorkee on 20th January 2013.Every weekend, a team comprising of 8 first yearites and 2 second yearites teach the children of every class and background there. Their classrooms are none as big as ours but it is the porch of the village temple. In the words of a localite, Harish Kumar, who has been instrumental in creating awareness about NSS Nirman in Majra, “Well, the programme started three years back and the village has been greatly benefited by their works.”The turnout was ordinary as compared to other days since it was their first visit after the semester break.Generally the children of the village also look forward to them, for some it was just a diversion in their daily routine while some came with dreams in their twinkling eyes. “I want to become an IAS”, Gulpham, an 8th std boy, said instantly while studying about the judiciary of India while Maneesh just wants to get goodgrades in his 10th class boards. Chanting of English alphabets chorused during the two hours of teaching by the little ones. The children especially enjoy the events organized by the NSS team time to time round the year. It also proves to be an attractive way of promoting the social cause, marked up active participation of hundreds of children. The cell is indeed doing some great work in the village.

NIRMAN- Carving Future

The construction activity in IIT Roorkee campus is going on in a full fledged basis in order to accommodate more and more students to the "developing" IIT system so that the newly arrived students have greater comfort. The dark part of this construction activity in the construction work is the lifestyle and development of those who are sacrificing everything in order to add to our comfort. Their children once studied but their rapid migration have kept them away from joining schools.

NSS had taken its initiative to educate these children last year in front of the NCC canteen. This activity continued fairly well. These children were also taken to a movie that was being screened in IITR and to to Srishti, the annual exhibition of Hobbies Club.

This year we have resumed our activity of teaching the construction workers in co-ordination with Cognizance '09 under the name

Nirman - Carving future
for those who are carving our future with their own at stake

Feel free to join hands with NSS in order to teach these students. We have this programme running daily at the NCC Canteen Verandah from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
