Nukkad Natak

“The finest gesture one can make is to save life by donating Blood.”
Environment and Awareness cell of NSS, IIT Roorkee organised a "Nukkad Natak"  to motivate students to donate blood .A blood donation camp was organised by NSS  on 13/9/2015. The event was held on 11/9/2015 on the UG floor.
Performed by twenty-three students of NSS Awareness cell, the group brought awareness to the spectators about the imperativeness of donating blood. Blood donation is one of the noblest cause towards mankind.  A huge crowd gathered to watch this motivational skit. By shouting slogans “aao! aao! natak dekho!”, the performers drew the attention of the crowd and people in the nearby areas.
The skit depicted the story of three friends who were riding on the same scooter without wearing helmets. They had an accident and one friend was severely injured and that friend was urgently taken to the hospital. Doctors said that he urgently needed A-ve blood immediately or else he would die. The two friends asked various people and plead  for help but everybody refused to donate blood. The friends had nearly lost hope when they met a disabled man who agreed to donate blood. That scene brought tears in everybody’s eyes. The life of the injured friend was saved and the skit concluded. The skit proved out to be a great success and received thunderous applause from the audience. The NSS group succeeded in their endeavour of bringing the value of Blood donation and many students pledged to donate it and hence the main objective of the skit was achieved by NSS.

The skit cleared various misconceptions people have regarding blood donation. Anybody above 18 years and whose weight is more than 45 kg can donate blood. Blood donation is not an arduous process and blood donation doesn’t make a person weak. There is enough blood in the body to donate it without any ill effects. The person’s body makes new blood after donation. Good care was taken of those who donated blood. These people were even given fruits and healthy refreshments at the end of blood donation.

India faces blood insufficiency every year and many people lose their life by virtue of not getting blood on time. Blood donation gives one true and everlasting happiness. The satisfaction one gets on helping someone in need and saving someone’s life is unmatched. So, give life to someone by donating blood. It may be a member of your family or a friend who needs this precious resource next.

It is time we had a transparency revolution!

Trust no man living with power to endanger the public liberty!

On the first day of our magnificent cultural fest, THOMSO’14, the members of Awareness cell, NSS IIT Roorkee, organized a nukkad-natak to create awareness about RTI. The event was held on 31st October 2014, on the U.G. Floor.

Performed by twenty-three students of NSS Awareness Cell, this nukkad-natak brought RTI act to the spectators’ notice by organizing a skit about the same. The Right to Information Act (RTI) is an Act of the Parliament Of India to provide for setting out the practical regime of right to information for citizens. Under the provisions of the Act, any citizen may request information from a public authority which is required to reply expeditiously or within thirty days. The Act also requires every public authority to computerize their records for wide dissemination and to proactively certain categories of information so that the citizens need minimum recourse to request for information formally. This law was passed by Parliament on 15 June 2005 and came fully into force on 12 October 2005 but there are very few citizens of the country who exercise their right.

Students shout slogans

The slogans “aao! aao! natak dekho!” drew the attention of the crowd and people in the nearby areas. Soon the crowd began to flow towards the U.G. floor .The crowd was very curious and one could have easily observed the sparkle in their eyes portraying excitement for the play. The crowd comprised people not only from our own campus but also from other colleges. The efforts put in by the street play performers finally bore the fruits, as the act was flawless.

Bringing awareness about the RTI Act

The NSS group succeeded in their endeavour of bringing awareness about the RTI Act. This event which began with completely ignorant spectators, ended on a positive note of enlightenment regarding the rights in this democratic country.

Skit on Women Empowerment

A skit was organised by the RT Awareness cell of NSS IIT Roorkee in the village of Sherpur on the outskirts of Roorkee. A number of students from RT Awareness cell and some from Prerna participated in this play on Women Empowerment. The play started at around 12 pm after the volunteers from the different cells of  NSS, went on a door to door campaigning spree to create  awareness about the free medical camp which accompanied the event. The volunteers, dressed uniformly in white shirts, participated in the event with great zeal and enthusiasm.
As soon as the volunteers began calling the people to watch the street play, the whole village was buzzing with activity as people rushed out following them to the village square and within no time a crowd gathered and the play started. The play focussed on the deplorable condition of women in the rural areas, where women are discriminated against, with the cases of eve teasing by men increasing and atrocities like female infanticide, rape or dowry related crimes. The message showed dignity towards women without whom the human race is incomplete. The village elders were elated and applauded the students for generating awareness. “We need to be aware about the women equality in modern times especially when the sex ratio is as low as 800 females per 1000 males in some parts of India”, said Ram Prasad, a sexagenarian trader from the village.

The event was a huge success and saw massive participation of men, women and children alike. The volunteers had put in numerous hours of practice for the event and had been working on it for more than a month. In the end their efforts bore fruit with the play sending a strong message on the equality of women among the village folk.

Indira Gandhi National Disability Scheme

On the 13th of October, the students of RT awareness cell took up a rather distinct issue that is Indira Gandhi National Disability Scheme. The IGNDS is a scheme introduced by the government which benefits the physically disabled people below the age group of 64 years. There are many benefits through this scheme including a four hundred rupee stipend per month. Many physically challenged people of the village were not aware of this very useful government scheme and were informed about the procedure to apply for the scheme. Health Survey at Majra Village

A health survey was conducted on 30th September by the students of RT Awareness cell analyzing the medical facilities available in the Majra village.
The students showed their keen interest in the activity by going around the village inquiring about the health care facilities available to the people within their reach both geographically and financially. It was found that though many private clinics have been set up, people still prefer the government facilities because of financial reasons. What came to notice was that a lot of work still needs to be done to improve the medical facilities in the rural and inaccessible areas of the country.
